Separating Surveys from Completed Field Records

The visible feature was only the surface

School-dropout research needs a consistent way to organize survey definitions and completed field records. Separate resources make those responsibilities explicit while account-related modules provide a foundation for managing access.

The system also had to respect concrete constraints. Automated test scripts exist, but no checked-in test files establish passing coverage. No live deployment, hosted API documentation, or research outcomes were verified. The completed-survey model contains domain-specific school and location fields; this is not evidence of a general-purpose form builder. Management endpoints and external integrations require authorization and runtime validation before production use.

My role covered survey-domain modeling and backend api development, with responsibility for survey resource models, database services, versioned routes, and shared request infrastructure.

I turned the constraints into boundaries

An Express and Mongoose API prototype for school-dropout research, separating surveys, templates, and completed survey records alongside user, role, permission, and authentication modules.

Dedicated survey, template, and perform-survey modules keep setup data and collected field records in separate domain boundaries.

Mongoose operations live in service modules, keeping database work separate from route composition and controller response handling.

Completed survey records include school and location fields rather than presenting the API as an unrestricted form-building engine.

The key decision: Separate survey definitions from completed records.

The implementation had to prove the model

I delivered the work across the full path: Implemented survey-domain models and CRUD services using Mongoose. Composed versioned survey and account resource routes with shared middleware and error handling. Defined school and location fields for completed survey records.

The result is concrete: The inspected source contains concrete survey persistence operations and separate models for survey setup and completed records. The project demonstrates research-oriented backend modeling; production operation and real-world research impact remain unverified. Service modules isolate persistence work from the API route table, giving later validation and testing a concrete boundary.

The senior engineering lesson was that solving the visible workflow is only half the job. The architecture must also make constraints, failure modes, evidence, and ownership explicit enough for the next change to remain safe.
