Survey Module Backend

api

An Express and Mongoose API prototype for school-dropout research, separating surveys, templates, and completed survey records alongside user, role, permission, and authentication modules.

Client: TalendIT · View client experience

Role
Survey-domain modeling and backend API development
Scope
Survey resource models, database services, versioned routes, and shared request infrastructure
Status
Survey API prototype with Mongoose services; runtime and production readiness unverified

Problem

School-dropout research needs a consistent way to organize survey definitions and completed field records. Separate resources make those responsibilities explicit while account-related modules provide a foundation for managing access.

Constraints

  1. C1

Automated test scripts exist, but no checked-in test files establish passing coverage.

  2. C2

No live deployment, hosted API documentation, or research outcomes were verified.

  3. C3

The completed-survey model contains domain-specific school and location fields; this is not evidence of a general-purpose form builder.

  4. C4

Management endpoints and external integrations require authorization and runtime validation before production use.

Architecture

An Express and Mongoose API prototype for school-dropout research, separating surveys, templates, and completed survey records alongside user, role, permission, and authentication modules.

01

Versioned API

Express mounts survey, survey-template, perform-survey, authentication, user, role, and permission routers.

02

Domain models

Separate Mongoose models represent surveys, templates, and completed survey records with school and location fields.

03

Persistence services

Survey services call Mongoose create, find, update, and delete operations with common service-error handling.

04

Request infrastructure

Application middleware includes request sanitization, compression, rate limiting, and database connection handling.

Decisions

D1

Separate survey definitions from completed records

Dedicated survey, template, and perform-survey modules keep setup data and collected field records in separate domain boundaries.

D2

Place persistence behind services

Mongoose operations live in service modules, keeping database work separate from route composition and controller response handling.

D3

Model the actual field-record domain

Completed survey records include school and location fields rather than presenting the API as an unrestricted form-building engine.

Contribution

  • Implemented survey-domain models and CRUD services using Mongoose.
  • Composed versioned survey and account resource routes with shared middleware and error handling.
  • Defined school and location fields for completed survey records.

Outcomes

  • The inspected source contains concrete survey persistence operations and separate models for survey setup and completed records.
  • The project demonstrates research-oriented backend modeling; production operation and real-world research impact remain unverified.
  • Service modules isolate persistence work from the API route table, giving later validation and testing a concrete boundary.
